Who sells outdoor advertising in Spain

Street furniture, buses and metro in the big cities are run by concession holders that win a public tender: Global sells the buses of EMT Madrid, TMB in Barcelona and EMT Valencia, plus the Barcelona metro, and JCDecaux the Madrid Metro, under a 10-year concession renewed in 2023. None publishes rates: you buy through an agency or by asking for a quote.

Billboards and many screens belong to smaller outdoor companies and local owners, who sell directly or through agencies and resellers. On Publicit they publish their site with price and data, and the advertiser books it with no intermediaries.

Do you need a licence to advertise outdoors?

If you book a site that already exists, you do not apply for a licence yourself: in Madrid, for example, the licence belongs to the installation and its holder is the advertising company, whose name must appear on the site, under the 2009 Outdoor Advertising Bylaw. But the same bylaw also holds the promoters of the advertised product responsible for infringements, so it pays to book with a holder whose licence is in order. Each city council has its own bylaw.

Circuits, faces and fortnights

Three words that appear in any outdoor quote. A face is each side of a site: a mupi has two. A circuit is a set of faces bought together, spread across a city or an area. A fortnight (catorcena) is the 14-day period in which billboards are usually sold in Spain. On Publicit an owner can group several sites into a pack, which works like a circuit, or you can pick site by site.

Each format in detail

Price by city, how it is sold and what you must deliver for each format:

What each outdoor space shows on Publicit

On Publicit each outdoor site is published by its owner with the data an advertiser needs to decide without calling anyone:

  • Location, Street View and photos. You see the street and the framing of the site before booking it.
  • Dimensions and illumination. Width and height with their unit, and whether the site is lit.
  • Viewing angle and distance, and daily traffic. When the owner publishes them, they let you compare sites in the same area.
  • Nearby points of interest. For example a shopping centre or a station, with its distance.
  • Price and model. Fixed, dynamic or negotiable price, usually per week or per month, or by impressions on digital screens. Some owners group several sites into a pack, the equivalent of a circuit.
  • What you must deliver and when. Dimensions, formats and how many hours in advance they need the final artwork.

How to buy outdoor advertising without an agency

On Publicit you buy directly from the owner of each site, from your browser:

  • Create an account with your work email. It is free and nothing is charged for browsing or requesting.
  • Search by city and site type. Billboards, bus shelters, mupis, buses, stations or digital screens, each with its price on the listing.
  • Set budget and dates. Minimum 500 euros per campaign and 50 euros per day. A site can require a minimum number of days, shown on its listing.
  • Upload the artwork and request. The owner approves or asks for changes, usually within 48 hours.
  • Pay on approval. The site's price plus a 10% fee and VAT. Payment is held until the owner proves the placement with a photo, video or document.
